When reading webpages, watching videos, or simply browsing, you may have come across two terms - blogs and vlogs. You may have even wondered what the difference isbetween a blog and a vlogbecause they are after all similar words, hence getting confused between them is natural.

To help you determine which type of content you like consuming and creating, which type is easier to create and earn money from as a beginner, and to save you plenty of trial and error, let’s explore what each word means and how they are different.

Blog vs. vlog

Blog refers to a website that regularly publishes content in the form of articles, each of which is called a blog post. On a blog’s homepage, newly published posts are displayed on top with older ones below them in a reverse chronological order.

Bloggers can write on any topic they like, including but not limited to health and fitness, travel, personal finance, food and drink, beauty and lifestyle, parenting, and marketing. Their posts generally comprise text and relevant images, however, gifs and videos can also be added.

A vlog refers to a video log or video blog, as most of a vlog's content is in video format.

Like a diary, vlogs generally record an individual's life, thoughts, special moments, and experiences. However, like a blog. they can be on any topic the vlogger likes, such as reviews or tutorials.

Unlike blog posts which are published on an individual or company's website, vlogs are posted to popular platforms such as YouTube. They can then be embedded on an individual's own website.

A major difference

While a blog and a vlog are similar in some ways, the primary difference between them is that bloggers use written words to pen down their thoughts and opinions on a particular topic whereas vloggers record videos of themselves sharing their thoughts and opinions on specific topics.

Popularity of vlogging

Over the years statistics have shown that more than 90% of internet users globally watch videos every week. Yes, video content is much loved. However, people prefer watching tutorials, DIYs, educational content, comedy videos, and live streams much more than vlogs documenting the daily lives of vloggers.

Hence, we recommend creating how-to, comedy, or educational vlogs, which help solve problems and gain thousands of views.

Popularity of blogging

Based on recent blogging statistics, the internet has nearly 2 billion websites among which over 600 million publish blogs. This means that one-third of the internet is based on blogging.

Around 77% of web users read blogs. They rank number 5 on the most trusted source of information and are part of the most shared content. Businesses that post blogs have a considerably higher lead growth when compared to their non-blogging counterparts, as approximately 60% of people buy products after reading blogs written on them.

Conclusion

Both types of content play different roles and cater to your audiences differently. While we recommend using them both to your advantage, you can choose to blog or vlog depending on which fulfil your goals more effectively.
